Where those numbers come from: Reverb's sold-price pages for the GA-5 Skylark, the 1953 GA-20, the GA-30 and the 1952 to 1954 GA-40 Les Paul, read October 28, 2026. Reverb's ranges come from completed sales in used condition and leave out shipping and tax. The model groupings and covering colors are Reverb's own labels.

Edgewater's cash offer on a vintage Gibson amp would typically land around 20% under those sold figures, and lower when the speaker, the transformers or the covering have been replaced. The two patterns in Reverb's data worth knowing: the 1950s amps sell for more than the 1960s student amps, and the tan and cream Skylarks sell for more than the black ones.

How to identify a vintage Gibson amp

  • GA-5 Skylark: Gibson's small practice amp. It runs a single 6V6 power tube with a 12AX7 preamp tube and a 5Y3 rectifier, for roughly 4 to 5 watts into one 8-inch Jensen speaker. The GA-5T is the version with tremolo.

  • GA-20: a step up, rated at roughly 16 watts with a 12-inch Jensen P12R speaker in its 1950s form. It came as the GA-20 Crest without tremolo and the GA-20T Ranger with tremolo, and the GA-20T left the line around 1961.

  • GA-30: a two-6V6 amp with a 5Y3 rectifier, so more headroom than the single-tube Skylark.

  • GA-40 Les Paul amp: the amp Gibson paired with the Les Paul guitar from the early 1950s. Most versions use two 6V6 power tubes for roughly 14 to 16 watts through a single 12-inch Jensen P12Q. Two-tone covering appears by 1956, and Gibson itself has called the 1956 to 1959 two-tone GA-40s the most desirable.

If you are not sure which model you have, the tube layout and speaker size above narrow it down, and a photo of the back with the panel off tells us the rest.

How to date a vintage Gibson amp

The most dependable way to date a vintage Gibson amp is from its parts. The speaker frame and the potentiometers usually carry an EIA source-date code: a three-digit maker code, then the year, then a two-digit week.

Maker code

Maker

Where you find it

220

Jensen

Stamped on the speaker frame

137

CTS

On the back of the potentiometers

134

Centralab

On the back of the potentiometers

A speaker stamped 220 5 42, for example, is a Jensen made in week 42 of a year ending in 5. That single year digit repeats every decade, so 1955 and 1965 look the same: read the code together with the amp's features to pick the decade. A date code also gives the earliest the amp could have been built, not the exact build date, because parts could sit in stock before assembly.

Originality: what moves the offer

  • Speaker: a Jensen with a 220 code that dates with the pots is what buyers look for. A later or different-brand speaker is a common swap.

  • Filter capacitors: many surviving vintage Gibson amps have had them replaced, which is normal service, not a defect. Premier Guitar's bench test of a 1957 Skylark found both a replaced speaker and replaced capacitors. Tell us what has been done and keep any original parts that came out.

  • Transformers: tell us if the power or output transformer has ever been changed. Original transformers are part of what we pay for.

  • Covering and grille: we pay more for original covering, even worn, than for a fresh re-cover. Torn grille cloth and scuffed covering are expected on an amp this old.

  • Working or not: we buy non-working amps too. An amp that has not been powered up in years should be checked by a tech before you plug it in.

What to photograph for a free estimate

The front with the grille, the control panel, the back with the panel off showing the tubes and chassis, the speaker frame stamp, and any label inside the cabinet. Those five photos are usually enough to identify the model, date it and tell whether the speaker is original. Frequently asked questions

How much is a vintage Gibson GA-5 Skylark worth?

On Reverb, 1960s Skylarks in black covering have mostly sold for about $400 to $590, and tan or cream Skylarks for about $600 to $1,130. Condition, a working tremolo on the GA-5T and an original speaker move it within that range. Edgewater appraises them free from photos.

How much is a 1950s Gibson GA-20 worth?

Reverb's estimate runs about $637 to $1,447 for the 1951 GA-20 and about $994 to $2,343 for the 1953 version, with 2026 sales from about $1,500 to $2,500. Condition and originality decide where an amp falls in that range.

What is a Gibson GA-40 Les Paul amp worth?

The 1952 to 1954 GA-40 has a Reverb estimate of $1,187 to $2,437, and one in Excellent condition sold for $3,000 in October 2026. Later GA-40s sell less often, with recent sales around $1,080 to $1,500.

How do I date my Gibson amp?

Read the source-date codes on the speaker frame and the potentiometers: 220 is Jensen, 137 is CTS and 134 is Centralab, followed by the year and the week. The year digit repeats every decade, so match the code to the amp's features. It gives the earliest possible build date.

Does a replaced speaker or recap ruin the value?

No. Many survivors have had their filter capacitors replaced, and a swapped speaker is common. Both lower the offer somewhat compared with an all-original amp, but we still buy them, and keeping the original parts helps.

Edgewater Guitars buys vintage Gibson amps directly, nationwide, with free appraisals from photos. Call or text (440) 219-3607 or request a free estimate online, and we will reply with an offer and the sales behind it.
