Turn Your Guitar Into Cash

Introduction:

Dating a vintage Gibson acoustic accurately matters just as much as it does for Gibson electrics. Gibson used several different serial number and Factory Order Number (FON) systems for its acoustic flat-tops over the decades, and the right system to use depends on when your guitar left the factory. Read the era-by-era guide below to place your J-45, Southern Jumbo, L-00, Hummingbird, Dove, or other Gibson acoustic in the right decade.

Step One: Find Your Serial Number

On most vintage Gibson acoustics, look inside the soundhole first. Earlier instruments carry a paper label glued inside the body, visible through the soundhole toward the neck block; that label (or an ink stamp near it) is where Gibson recorded the Factory Order Number and, on many instruments, a true serial number. From the mid-1950s onward Gibson also began stamping numbers on the back of the headstock, the same spot used on its electric models, so check there too if the interior marking is faint or missing.

Step Two: Identify Your Serial Number Format

Gibson used several different Factory Order Number and serial number systems on its acoustic guitars. Click through the eras below to find the one that matches your guitar.

Step Three: Verify with Physical Features

While serial numbers and Factory Order Numbers are helpful, confirming your dating through physical characteristics is essential, especially for the least consistent eras. Different era Gibson acoustics have distinct features.

Step Four: Determine Value

After dating your Gibson acoustic, understanding its value depends on several factors:

  • Model and body style

  • Originality of bracing, bridge, and tuners

  • Overall condition and any repairs

  • Wood species, including whether the back and sides are Brazilian rosewood or mahogany

  • Market demand for that specific model and era

Most Valuable Eras:

  • Pre-war Gibson acoustics (before 1946), especially those with scalloped bracing and Brazilian rosewood

  • Late 1950s to early 1960s Gibson dreadnoughts and jumbos, before the changes of the later 1960s

  • Early Advanced Jumbo and pre-war Nick Lucas models

Need Expert Help?

Dating Gibson acoustics can be complex, especially for instruments from the 1940s through the 1960s when Gibson’s own production records were inconsistent. If you are uncertain about your guitar’s exact year, our team can help.

Frequently Asked Questions

More Questions?

Can I sell my guitar without leaving home?

Absolutely. For high-value or rare instruments, we come to you anywhere in Ohio. For other guitars, you can submit photos online and receive a cash offer within hours.

Do you buy guitars in Ohio?

Yes — we buy guitars throughout Ohio including Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Dayton, Akron, Toledo, Youngstown, Canton, and all surrounding areas. For valuable instruments we also travel to Michigan, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and West Virginia.

What documentation do I need to sell my guitar?

No special documentation is required for most sales. For very valuable vintage instruments, any provenance or ownership history is helpful but not necessary. We handle all the paperwork to make selling easy.

Do you purchase other musical instruments?

While we specialize in guitars and amplifiers, we occasionally purchase other stringed instruments and related gear. Contact us with details of what you're selling.

How does your online appraisal process work?

Our online appraisal process is simple: submit clear photos of your instrument (front, back, headstock, serial number, and any damage), along with details about its history and condition. Our experts will evaluate the information and provide a fair market offer within 24-48 hours.

Do I need to clean or repair my guitar before selling it?

No, please don't make any repairs or even clean vintage instruments before contacting us. Original condition—even with dust, grime, or minor issues—is often preferable for accurate valuation. Improper cleaning can actually damage valuable finishes on vintage instruments.
